John Matthies
Managing Director of Australian Aged Care Group Pty Ltd
John has had a lifelong (60+years) involvement in the Aged Care Industry initially in his youth whilst his parents Betty & Keith Matthies conducted several smaller facilities where the family lived on site and later as a lawyer when he conducted a successful Collins Street Legal Practice for nearly 40 years. Contemporaneously with his legal practice and by reason of his lifelong involvement in Aged Care, John in the early 2000’s had the foresight to acknowledge the expanding demands for future aged care facilities. With his successful legal and property development background John was able to locate and acquire a 1½ acre site (formerly the home of the Catholic Archbishop’s residence) in Gellibrand Street Kew where he built the prestigious Kew Gardens facility. He was one of the first Aged Care Providers to incorporate larger more luxurious suites together with a movie theatre, café, gymnasium, hairdressing salon and other similar amenities.
He subsequently built a further very popular and spacious facility at Cowes on Phillip Island.
Now entering a third generation, John has for the last 10 years been assisted by his son, Edward, who is CEO of the company. Edward has brought a contemporary and dynamic focus, ensuring AACG’s superior level of aged care service remains at the forefront.
Outside of the family business, John is a bleeding-heart yellow and black faithful, having been a Richmond Football Club board member for 13 years, between 2004 and 2016. During this time John was part of the rebuild and steered the club through various challenges thrown its way.
This lifelong passion was recognised in 2013 with John being awarded a Life Membership at the AGM.
When John isn’t helping the Tiges out or striving to create enough quality supply of aged care residencies for Victorians, he can be found at his farm or at his home on the Mornington Peninsula. Having been part of the community for many years, John has seen first-hand the expansion of this pristine part of Victoria, and the rising need for greater amenities. Working with local landowners and councils, AACG recently submitted plans to create a state-of-the-art purpose-built aged care home in Sorrento, to meet the booming demand this region and sector are experiencing. Situated in outer-urban Melbourne, along the Port Phillip coastline, Sorrento is squarely in the confines of Australia’s ageing demographic sweet spot and presents an ideal opportunity for both AACG and the community.
